Chiselled, gilded bronze clock – Louis XVI era

Created by Antoine Coliau, Master Cabinetmaker in Paris in 1770.

This clock was made by Antoine Coliau, Master Cabinetmaker in Paris in 1770.
In the 1760s, clocks used to feature shapes and ornaments that were typical of a new Grecian-inspired style ushered in by the artists Jean-Charles de la Fosse and Jean-François Neufforge. Bronze is a key feature of this work of art, but that is not to say that it was the only material that was popular at the time. By then, artists had begun to use marble more often. They focused on structure and balanced shapes.
